Samsung unveiled its new flagship foldable phones at its annual ‘Unpacked’ event on Wednesday. Let’s take a detailed look at the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and see where it stands when compared to its rivals.

Samsung’s new flagship Z Flip 5 gets the company’s much talked about tear-drop hinge, which helps the screen to fold flat and not leave a gap like earlier. The company also says that the new hinge is more durable as its double rail design can handle any drop better than previous flip phones.

Samsung has retained its primary 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED display in the Z Flip 5, but it has upgraded the size of the secondary outer display to 3.4-inches from the 1.9-inch in Z Flip 4. The secondary display gets a resolution of 720x748 pixels. The refresh rate of the primary display goes up to 120Hz while for the secondary display, it is just 60Hz.

The new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 phone runs on the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC which is paired to 8GB of RAM. Internal storage options are 256GB and 512GB. Samsung retained the dual-camera setup of the Flip 4 with the same 12-megapixel wide sensor and 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. For selfies and video calls, there is a 10-megapixel front camera on the inner display.

The new flip phone from Samsung runs on a 3700mAh battery which supports 25W fast charging. The company claims that the battery can be charged from 0 to 50 percent in just 30 minutes. The direct rival of Samsung’s new Z Flip 5 is the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra which was also launched earlier this year. Moto Razr 40 Ultra comes with a 6.9-inch pOLED primary display and a 3.6-inch outer display. The refresh rate of Motorola’s flip phone is higher than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 with 165Hz for the primary and 144Hz for the secondary display. Moto Razr 40 Ultra uses a slightly lower version SoC as it has Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. The two phones offer the same 8GB RAM but Motorola gets only one storage option of 256 GB.

Razr 40 Ultra also has a dual-camera setup but with a 12MP primary sensor and a 13MP ultra-wide sensor. Moto Razr 40 Ultra gets a much better selfie camera with a 32-megapixel sensor. Talking about the battery, Motorola’s flip phone runs on a 3800mAh battery which supports 30W fast charging. Motorola has priced its Razr 40 Ultra at Rs 89,999.

Chinese phone maker Oppo also launched its Find N2 Flip in March this year. Oppo’s flip phone comes with a 6.8-inch FHD+ AMOLED primary display and a 3.26-inch outer display. The primary screen gets an adaptive refresh of up to 120Hz while the outer screen goes up to 60 Hz. Oppo Find N2 Flip is based on the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ SoC paired to 8GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage.

For the camera, Oppo has equipped its flip phone with a dual-camera setup of 50MP primary sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide sensor. For selfies and video calls it gets a 32-megapixel sensor with auto-focus. The Find N2 Flip is powered by a 4300mAh battery which supports 44W SuperVOOC charging. The price of Oppo Find N2 Flip is Rs 89,999.

Vivo launched its first compact flip phone in the global market earlier this year but it is yet to make its debut in India. The new Vivo X Flip has a 6.74-inch FHD+ AMOLED primary display and an outer 3-inch display. The refresh rate of the primary display is 120Hz. For the processor Vivo chose to go with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 which has been paired to 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal memory.

Vivo X Flip has a dual camera setup at the back – 50MP primary sensor and 12 MP ultra-wide sensor. Vivo’s new phone has the biggest battery in the segment at 4400mAh which supports 44W fast charging. The expected price of Vivo X Flip in India is Rs 72,000.

Chinese brand Tecno is also expected to launch its first flip phone later this year. The Tecno Phantom V Flip is expected to have a 6.75-inch AMOLED primary display with a refresh rate of 144Hz. The phone might run on the MediaTek Dimensity 8050 SoC paired to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal memory. The phone may come with a triple-camera setup at the back – 50 MP telephoto, 50MP wide and 50MP ultra-wide sensor. For selfies and video calls it might rely on a 32MP front camera. Upcoming rivals: Tecno Phantom V Flip

Another major brand expected to launch its flip phone is OnePlus. After the recent launch of its Nord 3 and Nord CE3, OnePlus is now expected to launch its foldable phones. One of them is expected to be the V Flip with a 6.67-inch AMOLED display supporting 120Hz refresh rate. The phone is expected to run on the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC with 12GB RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage. The V Flip is expected to have a triple camera setup – 64MP main sensor with two sensors of 8MP and 2MP each. While the front camera is expected to have a 16MP sensor. OnePlus is expected to power its flip with a 5000mAH battery, the biggest in the segment. The phone is also expected to support SuperVOOC charging. (Representative Image)
